Clay quality, soil quality, and water quality are the three big concerns. I like to have an easily accessible source of ore nearby (cave, don't need to build a minehole.) Variety of nearby terrain is nice, too, with some swamps or mountains nearby for curios.

If you are a fresh spawn then you won't be able to see quality. Look for a mountain/swamp or mudflat, and settle a few minutes walk (not within map view distance + some) from that. You can move later.

I suggest to settle near biomes that generate spindly taproots and blueberries.
They are quite important in early game.
Also dont settle next to water. Closer you are to water, more are chances that somone will see your place and kill you and wreck everything you have.
