How to get coal?

Postby MrPunchers » Thu Jun 16, 2016 12:13 am

I have a smelter, ready to smelt a batch of ores I have collected. Then I attempt to load logs, feel dumb and remember I need to coal. How to get coal? And what does Chalcopyrite give? Any ores I should look out for?

You can find it for mining too some times.

Chalcopyrite has a chance to give iron bars (I think it's 4%) and copper bars (8%). I think that's the chance to get a bar per ore? Correct me if I'm wrong, kinda confused myself.

Yes. Ore is having 8% chance for becomes copper and 4% for becomes iron. I think this number is for having all skills on mining character.

remember the 4% Iron and 8% Copper are effective when you have all metal related skills upto and including Deep Artiface, otherwise the percentage chances fall, As for coal, yes a tar kiln filled with blocks of wood, and then lit, produce coal, at an "Okay" rate, but will be Q based on kiln and wood used, better to mine for coal, it seems to be fairly common on lvl 1.

What terrain can you build Tar Kilns on? I have tried multiple terrains from Dirt, Paved Stone, Plateau, and Brick. I have flattened these, too.

area needs to be flat. I think grasslands can be built on, otherwise you need to pave.

As shown in image above, Tar Kiln requires 5x5 tiles of flat, paved terrain. Note that kilns shown in the image could have been squeezed slightly denser by pressing CTRL when placing them but I went with default center to grid so that they won't form wall you have to circle around.

Tar Kiln softcaps the quality of charcoal it produces. This shouldn't be issue when burning q10 blocks from "natural" trees unless you dig materials with alt that has only 1 survival. At the start of w8 me and my friend ended up having everything made of metal be quality 8 because we did that.

"Easiest" way to get above q10 charcoal is to get as high quality as possible Bone Saw and burn boards in the kiln. Clay and stone above q10 are relatively common in shallow waters and stone patches all over the game world.
