How do I fight?

I have absolutely no clue how to fight. I try to click on the icons of my moves, but I move. I try to press numbers, I start to drink the water I mapped to the 2-key. How do I use my skills? It doesn't really help to upgrade my skills if I don't know how to activate them. I want food...

The number keys 1-5 are used during combat, they should over-ride any other function when in combat mode.
