Is there any point in crafting leather armor?

I read that clothing does not give any bonus and it's all about the gilding, does it apply to armor too?
Will it give me any protection?

It's still armor, and as such, hasn't been affected by the gilding rules changes. Only clothing items were.

Leather is good to have around for things like taming and such if you can't afford to replace better armor. A good enough quality will soak all damage from most animals if they do get a hit in on you.
