How do you form a village?

Postby Slovania » Fri Aug 05, 2016 10:52 am

The question is supposed to be somewhat simple - how does one evolve from a well-developed hermitage to a village?

Playing with a friend, we've never had a plot system, therefore there are several safety concerns considering new people in a village:

1. Let them go everywhere and get a risk of them ruining your precious village, stealing your stuff and such. If you're playing with unknown people, the risk is too high.

2. Let them go everywhere, but hide expensive stuff. Hard to do, and a lot of hassle for sure.

3. Expand the village and invite them into an expanded zone, not the one you've had before. Seems pretty good, but considering some stuff, like minehole, it could be pretty frustrating for newcomers to know they have no access to the minehole. The fact that village totem is a "personal area" could make others uncomfortable aswell.

How do others solve the issue?

The only issue is trust. No matter the access you give in a 'regular' village, a single person can fuck up your village.

If they can access everywhere they can also build siege engines, wreck your walls and let people in to finish the job. The only solution is a walled, safe area where they don't have any access, like in your 3. But this is much harder to do and frustrating for everyone.

Just choose well your people :)

Have a keep and a larger village area. Let the peasants into the village but not keep. Eh whatever you do you'll get screwed over eventually.

So, I guess, no secret recipe? Just trust towards the strangers? Ugh...

Guess I have to be really bored with this game to make such a risk.

Wrong. Both risk and reward are higher. You can do a lot with a few dedicated players already, plus it's nice to have a chitchat every now and then.
Chances are that somebody in a bigger village does exactly that task you hate. Like tanning or breeding animals.

Well I am playing with a friend and we sort of self-reliant already, doing together most of the tasks possible, of course there's some boring job (aka chop 500 trees for these steel crucibles), but hey, rather do it myself than lose everything to some griefer.

That's more of a fun stuff and having someone to interact with.

I wonder why you play this game then. You seem to be quite scared of risks.

If I die, that's my bad (no matter how I died). Won't happen again.

But that's different in the case you invite someone. If I don't know the person IRL (or at least before recruitment), it is impossible to tell whether it is a griefer or not. So rather play it safe (that's how this game works).

Also losing a character and losing a village is totally different kind of losses.

Maybe I have a bad experience with random people, but last time I've somewhat helped people (in w7) by giving them a bit of free stuff like bear cape, metal tools and such, I've never seen them again. Makes me wonder what will happen if I share my gold storage with someone (okay I can put gold on alt but you get the point).

Ironically, when I've been in the position of random recruit, I've never done stuff I fear now.

No. If you invite an asshole it's your bad too.

That's pretty much my point.
