edited from prevouis subject wa misposted but cant delete so lol ill ask if im requires to acually mine ore at least once to make metal armor i got tons of iron and copper and stuff (abandon village) but cant make armor

You have to discover every item in a recipe to unlock it. You need to take finished metal out of a smelter to discover it.

You can also have somebody teach you the item you want to discover.

There is a "Learning system" ingame... If you can mate anyone, who have discovered some reciepe-material, he can teach you the following recipes by right-clicking on your char with this item in hand.
In case, when one of your alt (from same account) have some rare discoveries, he can create a parchment and then "write" by right-clicking with some stuff (i.e cast-iron bar), then anyone can read it for as discovering...
