Combat help

Thought I should try the new system - even though I never figured out the old... Bought some MC for a character, added a sword and shield, and headed out to find a bat. Turns out the character do not have any attack that does damage. Had to unequip and punch the bat instead.

So, what am I missing?

Terribly confused.

Maybe you have to fight some ants to discover attack first? Who knows?
