Use NVidia instead of integrated intel HD video card

Postby pinkslot » Mon Sep 26, 2016 8:16 am

I understand it is pretty obviously how to do that. But I was using Intel HD card for a long time, just because 20 fps are quite enough for my hermit-style gaming.
To enable your NVidia video card you should make a rule in NVidia control panel to use "High-perfomance NVidia processor" for path_to_java\bin\javaw.exe(e.g. C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_102\bin\javaw.exe).Image
I'm sure there is the same way to enable AMD descrete video card.

Sorry for the auto-translate, my english sucks.

I suggest to completely disable integrated one if you have some better one.
I feel like bottleneck in hnh is not related to gpu too much though.

I forgot to say my fps increase to 60, if we can believe to your own client(:

Fps heavily depends on where you are.
If you have decent hardware and you dont have too many programs running in background 60 fps comes quite easily.
But if you are in place with lots of stuff, like village. Fps is going down and fast.

I've a feeling there's something to do with how multiple objects are being processed. As to your previous post, there is some CPU bottleneck in Haven, but the biggest performance relies on GPU time.

I wish Intel would just quit making those crap video processors. Even the cheapest nvidia or amd chip is better and probably cheaper (but then they can't easily integrate to their cpu packages and Intel can't charge another $40 for them).

Thanks for posting this, pinkslot. This comes up often enough on tech problems when someone has a slightly older system. It gives an easy to find thread with illustrations.

As for AMD, no, Catalyst always uses the GPU or works in crossfire with the integrated GPU (discrete card along with an APU). This is a problem with nVidia only.

Im not sure if I remember right.
Animals, characters and equipment of chars wobbling/animating took quite a bunch of cpu time last time I checked.
Though I might remember wrong.

depending on the engine, animation can be done on gpu or cpu, but most programs i run across do tend to do it in cpu (though the vector math used with boning is done significantly faster in gpu). Could be that there are just too many small animations and may be one of the problems people are running into with frame rates.
