Armor and how it works

Postby tyrtix » Tue Oct 11, 2016 6:57 pm

I'm trying to figure really well how the armor works, so if anyone can confirm me some bits, i'll be happy and maybe write a sort of "guide" about that.
I know that now the damage is distributed among all the armor pieces worn, but is the damage evenly distributed?
Armor penetration and grievous damage do the same thing, ie they damage directly the target HHP, or penetration goes to SHP, while grievous have to get trough armor deflect and soak?
Thanks

Each attack have an amount of armor pene, which ignore armor and deal damage as SHP.

Each attack have an amount of grevious damage, which inflict a pourcentage of SHP damage as HHP.

So, we can say that grievous damage and armor penetration works only in pvp, and that grievous still is subtracted by armor before damaging the target.

as there are no hhp in animals, grievous should not work in pve, dunnow if armor penetration does vs animals, but obviously works for toon.

Anyway, after some math, i came to the conclusion that if the last patch wanted to make players use different pieces of armor instead of one or two gigantic ones, it does not, in fact it may be better to not have at all some armor pieces. An example:

i have a 40ql winged helm + 40ql bronze armor. They are respectively 21/12 and 43/32 deflect/soak. If i wear those two, i can stand, before getting any damage, the equivalent of the sum between deflect and soak of the lower armor piece, *2, a solid 66 damage. As now, there are no better pants than leather ones and plate greaves, but let's put on the leather ones. At 35ql they are 6/8, the formula is now max damage= (6+8)*3, or 42 damage. So, if i add pants, i start getting damage from a 42 damage blow! Adding also a bat wing at 45ql, that is 4/4, and the max damage i can stand before getting wounds will be 8*4, or 32 damage...
If i did right the math, this is totally not what the devs wanted to do...

Animals can do HHP to the player. The player does the same amount of damage, but it's just red (SHP) damage.

I thought jorb wrote up the armor changes fairly well. You might need to dig through the announcement thread to find specific comments on it as I think it was a follow up post to someone's question on the changes.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

mind that i've not said that changes were bad, but that just they got some weird effects that i think and hope were not intended. How to cope, change or screw all the armor mechanic is another thing :p

Animals can do HHP to the player.

That's what i meant to say. Animals have grevious damage and have armor penetration (30% I think).
