What's the best way to hunt?

Title says it all, should I go ranged combat or melee combat? I am a small hermit just barely getting by.

good way to start is get 10-20 marksmanship and a bow and arrows make a boat and find animal atk run to boat go to deep water shoot till it runs chase down and melee till dead, and when do feel like meleeing make sure have parry and i just use a sword and punch and parry till get chop then chop and parry (parry i think auto parrys for ya)

How do I get parry, is it from a skill or is it from a discovery?

Arrows softcap animal quality now, so don't bother with marksmanship to hunt.

To use melee you can either cheese animals by blocking them in, or get a horse. Apart from boars, all animals will outrun you on foot.

iv never boat hunted, but i can out run fox if short term chase lol and i had parry at combat update so not fully sure how to get but equiping sword during combat prob helps, thou im not 100%

Foxes spawn on the terrain that you can sprint on. Most animals spawn on forest (no sprinting), and you can't catch them unless they get stuck.

What's the easiest sword to get, do I need metal?

bronze sword (ill give free if willing to run) it takes 2 copper and 1 tin thou and crucible and metal working one batch is enough for sword

im pretty close to mid map i dont think near that realm thou but offer always there if want thou if do some mining should not be too hard to get the copper and tin
