How do I find cave clay/How rare is it?

I found an underground lake while exploring and dug a tunnel to it, expecting to find cave clay if I dug the soil there but I was wrong. It was all ball clay and a total disappointment. So, is cave clay something you find like the new type of clay that spawns near coasts? I was wearing my monocle and exploration gear so I definitely should have found some unless it just didn't spawn in that specific lake.

It spawns on the cave floor in the same way as glimmers, I don't find it that often so think it's fairly rare.

Oh, that's pretty odd. You would think it would be found in or near water. Oh well, guess I will have to explore caves like crazy. :?
