Combat System: At what point is it ever worth defending?

Postby Soukuw » Tue Nov 22, 2016 7:53 pm

So say something is attacking me with blue this is what happens:

+10 Dizzy (Attack)
+5 Damage (Attack)

My stats end up as:

10 Dizzy (Attack)
95/100 HP (My HP)

So I defend and they attack again:

-10 Dizzy (Defense)
+10 Dizzy (Attack)
+5 Damage (Attack)

And my stats:

90/100 HP (My HP)
+10 Dizzy

Well what the hell did defending just do for me? I could have attacked and dealt them damage but instead we just ended up where we started and now I have more damage on me. Yes these are imaginary stats but for the most part it seems like it's never worth defending as you might as well just pound out attacks.

you need to factor in agility and cooldowns, attack doesn't work turn by turn

This is not a valid point, we can compare same-stat opponents using same moves. It will be as if turn by turn.

The key is that the more you spam attacks, the less efficient attacks are and the more efficient defenses are.

Using OP's example, first attack will open 10%, second will only open 10% of remaining 90%, i.e. 9%. Third attack will open about 8%, fourth will open about 7% etc. After 4 attacks, you are ~34% open, not 40%.

Now for defenses, they remove a percentage of current level of opening. Say you use -50% move when you are 10% open, it will reduce opening by 5%. But if you are 60% open, a single defensive move will reduce opening by 30%.

I might be not 100% accurate, but pretty close.

But OP does make a good point I think, take a moose for example:

Moose will give you 3 openings but they all start out very low and you'll have to build IP to either use dash to drop the lowest one or build more ip to use something like artful evasion to lower them all a bit but either way it's time you end up wasting that could be used just to hit the animal and kill it before it ends up dealing the same amount of damage it would have while you're "defending" against it anyways.

My post was the theory, but yes, in practice punch-punch-punch-chop is simple and efficient.

If you dont know what you're doing defending is in most cases, completely pointless.
Of course one can hope that the attacker is as ignorant as you.

yea, no matter how you look at it, you will always take damage no matter what.

did an experiment the other day and put it in another thread:

tried the system out a bit, but still amateur at best, so take this with a grain of salt.

after having mixed results with some of the wild life I tried a new approach.

I sparred with a m8 who had no combat stats (2 ua/1mc)

he just spammed left hook I spammed sidestep.

I began losing shp after the third "cycle"

I had 71 ua atm.

is this intended, that no matter what the stats, there will always be blood on both sides?

Okay, after 2 weeks of battling around ~80 ME/UA, this is true. Unless You have heavy armor, You will ALWAYS get hit at some point. (but somewhere of 20dmg, is not a big deal, right?)

The point now is, not to spam attack/defense buttons and pray for the win. Now, You have to know which skill and WHEN is to be used (especially in defensive).

I'm pretty sure jorb said in the announcement that this was the intention.
