Surface Ore Boulders Regenerate?

I was heading southwards on a path I've taken easily a hundred times before, when I come across an untouched Iron Ochre Boulder that I'm certain was never there before. Do these occasionally regenerate on the surface or am I simply blind?

Most likely just walked into the new area of the map that was expanded recentlyish, boulders don't regenerate.

Boulders do regenerate but I have not seen metal ones do so.

I'm fairly certain I'm on the edge of the old map, and I know I've walked south from there many a time.
