I apologize if this has been answered somewhere, but google and forum search both left me without an answer on this...

Basically I've been wondering what exactly determines the quality of a dead animal that you kill. Earlier today I killed a bear with four arrows.
While it was alive, the bear had a quality of ~150. The corpse dropped to a disappointing 60 though.

I suspected that the arrow quality (they were ~50) has an influence, but I've killed deer of Q90 before and got a Q70 corpse.
So does the number of arrows you need also have an effect? What about bow quality and marksmanship?

This is so very confusing. @_@

Arrows softcapping animals is a new thing that was added recently for who knows why.

Ah I see. However, q50 arrows killing a 150 bear would not result in a q60 carcass... If I punch in all four arrows it took to kill the bear, though, (q50*q50*50*50*150) I get to ~63, which is pretty much how it turned out in game.

In essence that means I am far better off looking for lvl 100 boars or deer that can be killed with one shot, since they'll yield much better materials...

You can always take two boats, lure a animal to the water, break aggro and then quickly block it in with the other boat.

That way you can melee it from relative safety, moving away after each hit.

My best guess is that it was introduced as a counter to arrowing trolls with throwaway alts, alternative explanation is to slow progression by denying q250+ bones in week 1.

I'm confident that even the boat hunt thing will be fixed soon.
In my mind the softcapped leather by projectiles is a good addition, and it would even be better (once exploits are fixed) if leathers would become a more valuable item in the game....a kind of currency as it was in the past.
And then we could even think to a better way to link items quality with the gameplay....idk, something like: using 8x pieces (1x1) leather instead of 2x pieces (2x2) making a leather armor should cap a lot the final quality result. (my english, sorry I slept only a bit)

Hunting with bow & arrow is useless now. Unless your arrows are ridiculously high q you'll always get a major quality reduction on the prey.
What people suggested with the boats is a good way for bear hunting. You'll notice they 'tick' every few seconds. those few seconds between ticks are your chance to throw in a hit.
This works best with 2 people, but it's possible to do alone and you can get million q bear again

Also, learn to fight if you dunno how. Deer are relatively easy to kill if you can get some metal gear
