Arrow size while prospecting

Postby chocolaterain » Fri Dec 16, 2016 9:43 am

Prospecting has been by far the most ambiguous thing I've done in hafen so far. I can't seem to make any sense out of the arrow sizes. I'll start by prospecting at a certain tile. In this specific case, the arrow is relatively large and is pointing towards the NE. This is level 2 prospecting by the way. I'll mine my way through the NE so I can prospect the node it has found. All the while mining, I'll prospect using rustroot extract of ql~25. The arrow size changes from large, to small, to large again, to small again the closer I get to the direction it's pointing in which has left me very confused. Does a bigger arrow mean I'm further away or that I'm close to the node? Also, how can it keep switching between large and small if I keep getting closer to the node? Obviously it should only stick to either large or small depending on my distance, but not both?

Someone please, enlighten me.

Not sure but i guess it detects how many ore tiles there are in the range...it should be small when far and becoming large when you get closer, btw it could depend based on the ore tiles disposition. Again, not sure but sounds reasonable to me.

In my experience it's the opposite, but like this there's no way of knowing for sure unfortunately.

I don't know if it works the same but:

When You search for water, the arrow is longer and more accurate, if You're far from source. It's big when You're very close to it.
Also, I hope You're prospecting on Level 1 for ores on Level 2, because prospect always works on level below You, not on the same You are.

(I had no problem so far with prospecting.)

If You're directly above node, it will give text pop-up about material You found.

thanks for that info, I assume mining would work the same then

and yes I know about the last part

As far as I experienced it the mechanic works like this:

A scan with the range enabled by the rustroot quality is made for the nearest ore (one level below), if a tile is found the quality of the RR determines (to some extend) the width of the wedge which is supplied to the client in a random direction with the direction to the nearst tile somewhere within the wedge. If the length of the wedge changes that's IMHO purely to fuck around with the player as it dosn't seem to have any meaning at all.

thank you for another piece of clarification, I'm getting a better hang of this business
