Order of importance and getting started

Postby Iracus » Tue Jan 03, 2017 7:36 pm

Hello everyone,

I am a new player coming from Salem and I am planning on playing once the reset happens. So in order to help my base planning, I was wondering the order of importance for skills. I am planning to start by making a crafting/industry main until I find a spot to settle where I will get a combat alt set up to help defend myself early game.

So in terms of building a base, would it be wise to grind out a palisade and enough LP to cover it right away? Then after begin farms set up?

In regards to farming, what plants should I farm a lot of, and what should I only set limited space to farming?

Also, any general suggestions for a new player to get a good start on a new world would be appreciated. Thank you.

Here's the wiki - http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Haven_and_Hearth_Wiki
Also, not sure if you have seen it yet, but Sevenless' guide is pretty good - viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40714 .
IMO, I wouldn't grind out a pali & cover it ASAP. My first priority to get enough Survival (with gilded equipment ofc) to find a nearby decent Quality Clay & Water spots (the best quality I could find were ~Q40-Q50 for both resources in previous world). I may not set up my camp right next to them, but having them nearby(within 15-30 mins of Real Life travel) is good enough. I'd probably have one (or several) temporary camps while I travel & look for them, and these camps would most likely not have any pali around them.

What survival level should I aim for to find quality nodes?

Erm.... It depends :p. I don't really have an answer lol. Like I said, my best found water & clay node was around Q40 . If you want to settle down quickly, I guess Q30 aren't very hard to find.

Regarding what plant to farm, do read Sevenless' guide on farming. Here's my opinion:
Flax / Hemp for String resource
Barley / Wheat for Straw resource
Beets / Carrots for animal Fodder. Some people like using Pumpkin as well.
Poppy Flower for curio (the flower itself is a curio, and for crafting bouquet off flowers later on).

I don't have much info in other crops as I didn't grow much of them. You might look into the wiki to see what they use for. I'd grow some of them and try out the food combo.
Grape is good for wine & cheesemaking, but I'm not sure if I'll be making any cheese ;)

Your first priority is to get yeomanry and a claim up. Put a roundpole around it to start with, and hunt enough hides/bones for the palisade. Hopefully you'll have a secure base set up before anyone can do anything about it.

After that, it's up to you really. Get a farm started, try mining, etc. Remember to get WWW's in all directions as the seeds are the same when they're close together.

For new players, you really shouldn't be caring too much about quality nodes.

Just follow Sevenless' guide and look for a nice (and fairly safe) location to settle.

High quality water will restore stamina much faster and with less energy reduction. Also useful for baking in recipes that require water.

Clay is for high q kilns, which in turn give high q bricks, and you use those for high q smelteries/ovens.

I think about 60 survival should be you go to before you look to settle. You can cheat a little bit by making bulk nettle clothing and slotting it with taproot lacing/leather patches if you have them. With a little effort you can get a nice +20 extra survival.
This will help you find good water. Water is IMO the most important source to have high Q on in the entire game. Try to find one, and mark any other nodes you find on your map so you can go back to them if needed.
Water up to 40Q is fairly common (at least was in W9), but you should get more survival than that in case you happen to stumble upon that sweet 60+Q

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”

Agree with you there. Brand new players shouldn't care about quality nodes. Learn the mechanics & enjoy the game first. You can easily set out to create another base and/or join another village later.
