Does Black Coal still exist? (Has anyone mined it?)

Postby VDZ » Sun Jan 08, 2017 9:18 pm

According to the world 10 announcement post, tar kilns now take 3.5 real life days to burn coal. I also noticed that you need to at least fill it up to half to light it now (not sure when that changed).

This feels like a change intended to delay metal production in the first couple days of the world. However, nothing was mentioned about Black Coal, which would allow you to smelt metals on day one. Has anyone been able to mine any Black Coal, or is it gone (at least from layer 1) to completely make it impossible to smelt metals at the start of the world?

I'm pretty sure i saw someone head into a cave with a mine helmet, so probably.
Total misplay.

Are you sure it was mining helmet? I guess it could be possible (even though I doubt it) to have first leather already and probably someone already has (shitty, thanks to masonry hard cap) anvil+hammer... But why waste precious first resources on a shitty helmet? Level 1 cave-ins aren't that big problem and low q miner's helmet is not that much of a help anyway...

Which would mean that they aready had coal to smelt ore. Which is the question of this topic.

I understand that. Just wanted to clarify how sure linkfanpc is in "minerness" of the helm. :) Because to me that sounds unlikely and we also got new cosmetic hats now, so... I have to admit I have not seen underground coal yet. I don't think it was removed (I hope that would be mentioned in the patch notes at least) but would be nice to be sure.

What difference from level 1+x?
In my experience a cave-in at any level causes damage equal to your full hp and the miner's helm halves this damage regardless its quality.

I also took a nice 24 HHP damage from a l1 cave-in so I would also build a miner's helmet asap for exploratory mining.

Each layer increases in damage. Layer one usually knocks you out at 100 HHP where as layer two can kill you by hitting 200 HHP. Also back to the main post of this topic, I have been through several caves and prospected them all and cannot find coal at layer 1. I have found every basic metal and stone on layer 1 but no coal. If someone has found coal, can you send proof because I am currently doubting that coal is on first layer anymore.

This is outdated information from Legacy. In world 9 I was damaged by cave-ins at any level by the same pattern: if I have X hp maximum, I get X damage without helmet or X/2 damage with helmet. So if you mine with full shp and hhp and wearing miner's helmet, it gives you an ability to survive two cave-ins without knocking. You can receive double or more damage if you standing not exactly in one tile, so large boulders that will drop to a neighbor tiles can reach you body too.

Btw, I didn't find any black coal yet too.

Proof otherwise I do not believe it because strangely enough my friend and I had different results. We got all the way to layer 5 with alts and cave ins without miner helmets would kill them almost instantly where layer one wouldn't even knock them out most of the time. The only thing that is true is standing on half tiles.

Also to the statement earlier about the miner helmet, it could have been possible if they filled the tar kiln and then were able to mine on day 2 but they would have to have built a kiln with impressive speed to get that done so it may have been maybe a different hat maybe?
