Questing Q&A

Postby MagicManICT » Mon Jan 09, 2017 3:39 am

I'm trying to figure out how they work as I suspect either a design flaw, a bug or such, but don't know enough to make a claim on that.

I died unexpectedly to stealth lynx and had access to about 6, 8 nearby quest givers. By "nearby," I mean about 3-5 minute walk tops. I had quests originating for 4 or 5 of them, the others being destination of the quests. When I died, I got a new quest, but was about a 10-20 minute walk away due to needing to walk the whole route without burning up too much energy (5000 to start sucks for trying to get filled up). The object of the following quests have been further and further away, as expected.

My questions are:
Is this because I'm using an inherited character? I have to pick up quests where I've left off? Why wouldn't I get a starting quest significantly closer to start?
Does giving out the quests lock up the quest giver until finished, or at least a period of time?

I'm thinking about doing some science with this to get some answers, but wanted to see what the community knows first. Please, add any other questions that need answering. Not sure I'll live up to xcom's beehive level of science, but I think I might try.

I think they just made quest givers farther away from eachother than before, because in w9 all my quest givers seemed much closer together. Maybe something with the new map gen is causing it to clash with the quest system and make quest givers less common, thus farther apart? idk just theories heheh
Suck me good and hard thru my jorts

Yeah, it's these theories I'd like to figure out. Maybe we can break the system and get it normalized a bit instead of having it turn into a bigger chore than necessary with a few people hitting the proverbial jackpot and others getting little.

same problem , I died yesterday on a vortex and since then the questing has been awful...
I had to travel 1h+ with boat just to meet a guy who will give quests in the area ...
Great that means everyday if I want to do quest again I need to travel 1h before being able to do that.

My theroy is that my previous character had visited all the possible quest givers in the area ... ( I quested a lot before I died) and the new char can't have quests from the quest givers I already visited.
I tried to abandon all the quests I had and start fresh.
I went to where we used beacon day 1 , used the 2000 xp magic to start a new quest chain and again first quest giver is 15-20 minutes by boat , one I never met before.
It feels like a bigger penalty than the 100k ish LP I lost tbh ...

I've also found that if i abandon a quest then i wont get quests from or relating to that QG from either other QG's or by communing with nature. Though this might have inadvertently been fixed with the 'quest still tracking after abandoning' bug fix. But certainly it seems like abandoning quests by the QG's in your area is a great way to have to travel long distances to quest again.

From my understanding... When your initial quest starts and has been completed, you are provided with a second quest and so on. These quests must have some sort of range as each quest provided to me is not a million miles away!

Now if you were to die and spawn randomly on the map, I can only assume the quests previously taken would still be there... and therefore you would have to travel the short/long distance to them (I have tested this with an alt and is correct). Abandoning the quests do provide you with new ones, however it seems you have to start again (kinda).

I'll need to do more effing around first, but i have some theories regarding my quests
cardinal directions changed to protect my location

-they're all somewhere between south and east of me
-i'm at a map edge right north of me
-i suspect i'm near the west edge as well
-4 questgivers so far are really close to each other, almost close enough to all fit in the bigger map window

I'm wondering if they generated close to each other due to the (possible) nearby map corner? Or perhaps i'm nowhere near another edge and it's all just happenstance. I'm really liking the quest system, so far. We'll see how i feel if i get burnt on a half dozen rewards in a row

I did find one of my first character's questors through one of the new ones I had to go to. As I get established a bit more, I'm going to drop in an alt or two from another account and see if that makes a difference.

Someone posted a bug with a quest giver over the world border recently.

you know what'd be amazing? A world that was effectively spherical, i.e. wrapping world edges. No true "center" or "edges" anymore, there's just the world and anyone could arrive by exploring in any direction at any time
