Place some sticks or blocks of wood on it. Then go to your adventure menu and "Light Fire" with two branches in your inventory. You should then begin to light a firebrand. When it's finished, it takes a moment, right click on the fireplace and you'll attempt to light it.

Another small question, do I just put food into fireplace menu to cook it? (I have some unbaked fruitroasts.)

Yessir. Though you'll have to wait for the fireplace to "heat up" (the bar to the right of the fuel bar) before it they'll begin to cook.

How long will it take? I'd imagine a few hours.

To heat up? Fifteen minutes maybe? To be honest I've never sat around to watch.

As far as the actual cooking of the fruitroasts is concerned, the wiki claims it's about 18 minutes at maximum heat..
