Caves..?

I'm a little unfamiliar with mining. Do caves count as level 1? And does that mean I can prospect from above/behind the cave and it'll give me hints as to what I might find?

Caves count as level one yes.

using rustroot extract you can find out whats on level 1 cave while standing outside, or find out whats on level 2 while on level 1 and so on.
