How do I make charcoal from a kiln?

As the title states, I'm trying to make charcoal in my kiln yet I@m struggling to do that.

On Brogdar's wiki it says you need to add blocks of wood/boards to a kiln, let it burn for around 17 minutes and then charcoal will be created, yet when I try to add them to the kiln nothing happens. Obviously I'm doing something wrong, anyone care to share their expertise on the matter?

Though you can't make charcoal in kiln anymore. You will need this:

Unfortunately, it isn't 17 minute-long process. It takes 3,5 days to make charcoal now.

Another question if you don't mind, the point of making charcoal was to discover the alloying crucible recipe in order to make bronze bars from the copper/tin I have aquired. Do you know how to make an alloying crucible or indeed bronze bars?

Apologies for the obvious questions, I just cannot seem to find the info on the web myself no matter how hard I try.

You don't need to discover coal to unlock the crucible.
Alloying crucible is under Build->Buildings&Constructions->Furnaces&Fireplaces->Crucible, you need to have discovered clay and bricks, and also pottery and possibly metal working skills. Takes 15 bricks & 5 clay to build.
When you build it, right click a piece of charcoal on it to add fuel. Light it, right click it again and choose your bronze bar crafting recipe, and then craft it. You'll need to have discovered tin and copper bars (taken them out from the smelter or read the material account made by another character), the recipe takes two tin bars and one copper bar and the result is three bronze bars.
