Get a better pick? It's going to be more helpful than raising STR another 50 points, I think. If we have the math right, the hardness of rock you can mine is equal to the geometric mean of your STR and tool Q--sqrt (STR * Q)--or at least the product of the two (not sure how the server tracks that internally).:

350 * 60 = 2100, 300 * 70 = 2100.

See what I mean about pick Q? That's going to be up to you decide which is more practical. 10 points on your pick might not be quite enough, though, and you'll still need more STR. That's the "middle" message on hardness, and I'm not sure if it's based on percentages over the rock hardness or a flat scale over it.

Drill hole, pack with powder and a fuse, light... run like hell. Works better than barrels. Explosives mining wasn't used until... 18th century?

And so began the Age of Jihad Alts. Hordes of naked hearthlings carrying explosive barrels, as far as the eye could see. Every siege became a repeat of that one scene from Helm's Deep, and none were safe.

probably worth noting that different types of rock and ore have radically different hardness modifiers, so you may be in a hardness node on top of a hard rock
