Shield up - whare to get

So i've been trying to get shield up for a long time. I pretty much have all the battle skills I need, but you can't teach shield up though perchament and no way I can get it from fighting with creatures.

I think the problem is that you get it from bats, and I didn't kill them at the start of the game and now I get nearly 0 exp for killing them and thus no combat abilities.

Any ideas how to get it?

You get shield up after you learn yeomanry skill, not from a kill (all the maneuvers are given you when you get a specific skill).
