Which side of a gate is the inside, and which is the outside

On a fence, a palisade, and a brickwall, which way should the gate face? Which way should it open?

I feel like this was asked before, but I did search it and couldn't find anything.

The side the doors open towards is the outside. Think of it like emergency exit doors, they always swing outwards so that in a rush, people can just push it open. (or if you prefer you can use a less weird comparison to help you remember)

If you build gates facing only one direction from your pali, always build them facing out (doors swing to the outside of your claim). But with the visitor debuff, there's theoretically no reason not to build at least one door facing in, so you can unlock and get inside if you're aggro'd.
