Claim shields inside realms

I have questions regarding how do claim shields work inside realms and about siege engines.
Are all siege engines limited by 5k damage to shield per hour? What if multiple engines are built? Is each engine limited on its own or are they all limited by 5k damage total/h?
Do village/personal shields work at all in realms?
If a Border Cairn is challenged do shields work for challengers?

I'd suggest reading jorb's patch notes on the matter. It lays out how much damage you can do per siege engine and the cap damage per hour (5000 is correct if I recall correctly). More help, but there is a limit as to how many you need to keep running. I believe this is the most recent changes, but I might have missed one: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=48354.
