random assorted questions of a noob

Ty all for directing me to those guides a few days ago, they helped a lot in understanding the basics, but I still have a lot of questions, I would appreciate answers greatly!

1. Is a surface stone deposit nearby necessary or convenient or is it just irrelevant and I should just focus on getting myself a mine shaft to fill all my stone needs? What are the most important things to have nearby when settling?

2. Will palisades splash onto palisades directly behind it? is there like a 5 tile minimum distance to prevent that if that's what happens? Is it good to spam layers of palisades if possible to make it more of a pain to get into my homestead?

3. Are Nidbanes still useless against anyone but other hermits? Seems like that update hurt hermits way more than helped them. Kind of demotivating

4. How important is a quality water node nearby? Should intentionally look for one and only settle near one?

5. How are satiations restored? I know about the whole reduce to 49% or something trick to refresh the oldest one, but are there other ways?

6. How do trolls spawn while mining?

Nice to have for infinite supply of a single type of stone (if you like aesthetic), but not really mandatory imho

2. Will palisades splash onto palisades directly behind it? is there like a 5 tile minimum distance to prevent that if that's what happens? Is it good to spam layers of palisades if possible to make it more of a pain to get into my homestead?

Palisade cascade damage applies to every palisade tile that touch the destroyed tile, so 1 tile of spacing is enough to keep them separated

I don't think there is any need to do more layers, you need a pali and a claim that fully cover it in order to gain a functional shield, and the shield will protect you for hours/days. If they really want to destroy you, a second layer of walls is useless because after that the shield is down they just need 1 hour to destroy the walls
4. How important is a quality water node nearby? Should intentionally look for one and only settle near one?

if you play for quality, water is one of the most important things. It is linked to tree growing -> boards -> coal -> metal (and other stuff ^^). However, is not so simple to find a good quality node that is not already claimed
5. How are satiations restored? I know about the whole reduce to 49% or something trick to refresh the oldest one, but are there other ways?

drink wine, beer, tea (and milk? wiki does not help on that)

Satiations, namely the lowest one, are restored when you get an FEP and you have 4 or more satiations below 50%. The four drinks--milk, tea, beer, wine--provide bonuses as well as satiating certain foods. You might have to drink a lot if you want the bonus, and if you want to push the satiation down from 100%. Note that drinking alone will not reset the satiations.

For water, you should be able to find q40 nearby. This might require dropping a well that needs a lot of rope. Locations vary. You might get lucky and find q50 or 60 or better. If it is better, guard it closely or at least make sure nobody else can claim it and lock you out.
