Taming

I'm extremely new to taming and was wondering if I could fight the animal with a friend to tame it, or if I have to do it solo?

Not 100% sure, but if your friend aggro animal, it counts as normal battle, because only one person can "trigger" taming progress by aggroing animal when it is ready. (your friend will just aggro it as "normal" enemy, but well, I don't remember anyone testing. Seems obvious).

Also do I need to punch/ any unarmed combat. Or can I use melee combat to tame?

Yes, you can.

im not sure if its 100% true, but it worked each time for us

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about
Taming with multiple people works fine, just be absolutely sure everyone involved peaces so they don't continue the fight after the animal yields

you have to cause a certain amount of damage to it before it surrenders but not so much damage that you kill it.

That's why punches are recommended because they are low damage & quick. Once the animal receives the proper damage it will surrender that round, or after 4-5 rounds of surrendering it will turn into a domesticated animal. Combat drops automatically once it surrenders the round as long as you have peace'd it.

note: I have not tamed animals since the combat system change, I suspect now you'll want 3-4 sets of armor on hand because the animals will destroy your armor.

this all the way, especially with the current combat system

However when fighting multiple people the taming animal behaves like all animals in a fight: no matter who starts attacking it, the creature will focus its attacks entirely on the strongest fighter. This person will need the armor more than anyone else, really, especially high q stuff that can take lots of wear
