Combat Insatructions not working?

So I have combat instructions for both Uppercut, and Sideswipe neither of which I know. I was told that Bats give both these moves. So I put Uppercut on my study bar and fought some bats. The first bat, gave me a punch, and the second gave me a haymaker. So I figured maybe I was told incorrectly that bats give uppercut, so I put sideswipe on, killed another bat, and got low blow. am I doing something wrong? do bats not give these moves?

If you don't mind me asking, what are combat instructions?

If I have a move you don't know, I can write it down on a piece of parchment. You then put it in your study bar, and next time you defeat an animal that can give that move, you get it. Or if we both have a move, but I have more instances of it, i can write it down, and you can study it similarly to a curio, except it uses lp
