Decay?

Hello guys i'm new here after discovering the game on youtube and after playing for 4 days i have a little area setup while i learn to play, but i noticed today that some of my fences are damaged was that a person or decay because they are not build on stone? I also wanted to ask how does 1 protect his stuff when offline when he cannot claim land yet? Thank you

It does sound like decay, a person would probably have destroyed completely instead of just damaging. Also, even on stone it does suffer decay if outside of claim just slower, from what I heard.

About keeping your stuff safe before claiming, not much you can do. You can build a leanto and keep up to 2 storage items inside it (only 1 leanto can be claimed by each character). Also, keeping things on yourself or alts is the safest way to keep the most valuable things while offline, since even leantos can be broken if the person has vandalism and is willing to leave a criminal scent.

I'd advise you to get a claim and a palisade up as soon as possible.
