What are my next steps?

Postby harison86 » Mon Apr 17, 2017 5:32 pm

Hi forum-goers, this is my first post here that isn't a reply in the simple questions threadso be gentle.

Can any of you give me an idea of what my next steps should be? I took this screenshot of where I'm currently living. The smaller house is dedicated solely to curio grinding, with stockpiles and containers for everything needed to make Mirkwood Offerings, Feather Trinkets, and Seer's Bones. The larger house has storage for everything that isn't stockpiled outside plus a dining table, herbalist table, and loom. Outside I have drying racks, tanning tubs, a fireplace, a kiln, a cauldron, a quern, and a rope walk. Everything is around 10q. I was constructing a tar kiln and oven before deciding to get advice from the forums.

H&H stats.jpg

So far my "plan" has been to just get as many utilities/industries up and running as quickly as possible, and upgrade their quality as I go along. High priority was getting a bee skep for faster crop growth and wax for hardened leather.

Am I doing things right? That's probably a bit vague and subjective, so failing that is there anything I'm doing horrendously wrong (besides not having enough space for the metal industry)? What should my priorities be at this stage of the game?

That's a pretty complicated answer, I'm not kidding when I say I've written 2 10k+ word essays on this topic :P

Simplest I can give: pick a large flat area (atleast 50x50) to claim. Build a palisade wall for a bit of extra protection. This should give you enough room for crops, a few animals, a little smithing area, trees. Don't worry about being next to water, you can make teleport roads to water and caves easily. Preferably pick it on the border of a grassland (area where chickens, clovers and horses) and a forest (denser trees) so you'll be able to clover horses more easily until you're able to tame them. Swamp nearby is useful, but not 100% necessary. Make a road to a swamp (if it's not near this just takes a bit longer), your cave of choice, and water.

Stat wise you want to push int to 30, then perception and agi to 30.

That's pretty much the basics you need to move forward.

Edit: Ok I'm stopping here, this would take too long otherwise XD

Ah alright, that's quite helpful!

I think I know a good spot nearby, on the edge between a grassland and forest. There's also a bunch of logs someone cut down and abandoned for materials, a lake and sand, and a giant swamp all fairly close together. I hadn't really considered using roads to connect resources I'm using, so thanks for that! Do you know if wagons move with me when I use them?

And on another note, thank you for writing that beginner's guide, it was very helpful for getting my bearings.

Read through the game guides (link in my signature), first of which is from Sevenless.
Or don't and explore the game for yourself, will take way longer but could be (in case you like the challenge) way more fun.

Honestly, I don't think that guide is relevant anymore. The general gameplay flow hasn't changed massively, but nearly every critical system that's not terribly self explanatory has. About the only section that's stayed 90%+ useful would be mining imo.

I read back through it again recently, and it's still relevant. A few mechanics have changed, drastically in the case of combat, but the information is still useful.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
