So, when they run (fly) and go over water, etc. You just lose themr ight? There's no trick to stopping them from fleeing?

when you start fighting, be between the bat and the water. You can also click the olive leaf button at the top right corner if the bat is flying away and the bat will stop running away. oh and make sure your sprinting before you start a battle....that's all I know.
let us all take a moment remember and honor trisby, the true desident of Tris, who was last seen in all white walking into a river with her beloved sledgehammer in her hands. May she find honor and glory in the next life

Did better the 2nd time, but then we wound up in a tree and I can't attack him. (Actually the 2nd tree, he re-engaged/resumed running after I got near the first tree) can a sling or bow take him out of the tree?

Yes you can shoot them, also get a sword as soon as you can - animals run after a certain percentage of their hitpoints have been taken down, if you hit them hard enough before that then they die instead of running/flying away, otherwise you will have the same issue with swans.

In regards to swans, hop on a horse, aggro them to lure them onto land, de-aggro (click the olive leaf at the top right) and then run their asses over. Easy peasy :D

No need to de-aggro them, just run them over as soon as they're on land.
