Once I tamed an animal, is it necessary to keep it tethered?

to keep it alive no. I have my cows in a fence and they're doing fine. They do need to be in the ring range of the food trough.

Tamed animals never despawn. But they eat food and can starve to death, where wild animals don't starve while tethered.
