Postby Portius » Sun May 07, 2017 9:41 am

There's only one main thing i need to know about H&H: is it as Trollish as salem?
what i mean is,am I going to get ganked and bullied constantly as im trying to mind my own business and just learn and play?

While there are dickheads there are also nice people.
Last updates lessened the problem with the first group as the 'return to start' from being killed was reduced in frequency (unless you repeat stupid decisions).

well i kind of figured as much as to the "two groups" was looking for a bit more detail, perhaps if i explain my nightmare at salem better: My girlfriend and I played salem for several months, had a small nondescript "base" with such defenses as we could build as newer players (several torchposts and some baby braziers, stone hedge and a split board fence beyond) and a mine, all on claims.

first, someone exploited a mechanic where our spawn (leantos) were not quite on claim to claim over and destroy, costing my g/f all gear. Then,my main character was murdered outright for no reason.

Later, another person beat up my g/f for no reason just outside our claim, and stole all her things, but didnt kill her. A few days after that, someone (I dont know if it was same person or different) again exploited what is apparently the intended mechanic to drop a "town" claim over the claim we had, thereby taking all our months of work and buildings in a single swoop. I spent probably about $100 and probably 10 times as many hours between the two of us to grind, and then some schmuck just comes along and ruins it all with literally NO effort, didnt even have to fight or worry about the so-called "defenses",needless to say we havent looked back. I find it hard to believe games like that exist, who wants to bother grinding their butt off when some jerk is allowed to come along and just ruin everything with literally no effort? the really galling part is its almost certain we had little to nothing of value for this person(s) it was pure spite...

While it still might happen that you encounter someone these days who goes out of his way in (more or less successful) attempts to grief you, it's somewhat unlikely to happen on the scale you experienced in Salem. Exploits like using villages to declaim hermits have been removed (villages can only declaim younger personal claims these days) and insta-kill outside your place should be difficult these days.

This is no guarantee though, so YMMV - and in case of problems you have the option to somewhat easily relocate away from people who you don't want to experience anymore.

To provide another perspective (since this "question" is really a request for experiences) I have played Salem for years after first starting with H&H. I have never been ganked, or griefed, on Salem, at least not yet. But I have had chars killed and bases raided.

I started playing Hafen at the beginning of last world. I immediately got overrun by a town of Koreans after which I got rage and hunted them down one by one until I died. I have recently started again playing Hafen and quickly found a quiet little corner where I can explore the new content without much interaction with others, which is not optimal game play but at least I don't have to worry about loosing months of work to griefers. So like the other commentator said, the game is what it is and your mileage may vary. You can say exactly the same thing about Salem. I'll more than likely go back if and when they add new content.

it's this issue of people mistaking convenience for laziness or "casual" gameplay, . . . there is no reason why not to have sacks . . .

Haven community is more forgiving.
For myself I always enjoy new players settling around since they can be useful for berry picking and other jobs.

When ever i meet new players i just give em a better stone axe for example tell em to feel safe around me and if they have trouble with a griefer something to tell me and i just chill , makes the world feel more alive seeing them grow around me and it dosen't affect me in anyway :D
The Infamous Alex A.K.A The Lion , The Fallen King , Destroyer of Worlds , Taker of women , Down under criminal , That one guy who forgets to bring his axe , Also lover of kittens and cupcakes , Stalker of mammoths and harvester of moss , Dispatcher of Russians , Rider of Buttstalion , Basement troll , Slayer of honeybuns , Romanian bane of nature
