Please tell me what happened to Haven 2.0

Postby esdo » Thu May 11, 2017 9:24 pm

I never really played this game. Just remebered it right now and i feel like playing.

I didn't play back when i first heard about it because there was a pay to play thing going on, so that one needs to pay for gameplay hours. As i remember it, this monetary system was applied when haven was updated to version 2 or something like that.

I was searching on the web about the incident and haven't found much - just a reddit thread ( named "Haven & Hearth 2 went P2P" )and a thread in this forum where ppl raged hard about the changes.

Im asking about it because I remember back in the day the store said "full and unlimited gameplay" wbut you had to play for game time. Checking the store now, theres still the "unlimited" message on, but no signs of requiring to pay for gameplay hours.

Is there a payment required to play the game, this days?
The "normal" haven version played today is the "2.0" one im talking about? ( year 2015 )
Did the population suffer too much with the change made in the business model? ( p2p )

Sorry for my bad english, and thanks for any replies

You dont pay for game hours anymore. so knock yourself out .

However those having paid a bit do get some benefits.
Try looking at Store. it explain what you get if you choose to pay either a one time sum or subscription.

Also the game has changed a bit both in combat and various other updates. I cant remember all the changes so it might be worth just reading announcements from the date you stopped ?

Oh ok then.

I read the store page but, as I said, it got me confused because back in 2015 the store page also said "unlimited gameplay" when truly it ( in my view ) wasnt - because it required a payment for hours of game time.

About the updates, I dont think i've spent more than one hour on the game, so I'll be learning it from scratch.

Thanks for the reply :)

You pay for convenience. In the early days, it's absolutely non-essential. Late game it's a pain in the ass to lack the inventory space, but it's doable. Your character also progresses slower if unpaid. You also advance your character faster (get up to a 1.5x multiplier to LP/FEP I believe). Fully playable without paying money. You won't be the best in the world, but you'll definitely be able to play and compete as part of a faction. Also, like eve, you can try to find stuff to sell and buy game time with from other players.

The community didn't take great to this after getting the game for free for so many years. There was backlash when any payment model was introduced. I do feel this current model is the best balance between payment incentive and allowing players to play the game indefinitely for free.

Tbh the time restriction for free players was not totally bad, but it was the time restriction on verified accounts also.
I mean, if you buy the game once you should have full playtime....we all know that people don't like subscription things.
Sounds fair to me after you spent your 50 hours as free player to pay 15$ to keep playing the game unlimited, or you will keep playing with your hours per week.

If someone dosn't like subscriptions: resort to single player games that are local to your machine.

Sustaining a server from one-time payments boils down to a pyramid scheme, it might work for a while before it implodes - but it will as everyone would have bought the game at some point and money intake would cease. Because of that it is a dishonest business model to sell eternal access to a server that is known to eventually cease to be available, asking for this is basically encouraging others (in this case the devs) to act immoral.

As a bonus: this all has already been discussed to death, in case someone is interested and has some days to read up on the past I suggest a visit to viewtopic.php?f=48&t=39713

No, no you misunderstood me.....my bad probably, with the English.
I'm totally agree with subscriptions to have more convenience and some benefits, like currently it is, I know very well that without them the game cannot survive very long.
Just saying that W8 was not good cause you had time restrictions both on free players and verified players (just more hours), with only subs players with unlimited time.
Instead of that I think they shuould have done: time restrictions on free players, unlimited time with verified, unlimited time + some benefits (like currently it is) for subs.
I think almost evrybody can agree with that....sounds fair to me after you spent 50-100 hours in the game for free you drop some money to keep playing, if you play a lot.
If you play casual just few hours a week, and you think it's not worth your money...you can keep playing with the free hours a week they gave in the W8.
Hope it's a bit more clear what I mean. Probably not :D

Thanks all the kind members for their clarification on the subject.

As for the payment method discussion, there are some online games that survive with jsut cosmetic shops and a one-time payment thing, however im not sure how it would apply to a game like this.

I honestly didn't get what all the rage on that "pay for hours" thing was for. My guess is that ppl where just scared of the whole game hours mechanic, because WoW, for example, uses a subscription method and nobody says its a bad one. And the thing implemented here was even better because it allows free-players, whereas wow resorts to only a trial system.

Another guess is that people only were upset because they would need to pay for a game that was previosly free.

And as for my question on population, did the game suffer much because of the P2Play thing? On the discussion thread "P2P plan" I saw a ot of players saying they were done with the game. I wonder if they came back afther the payment method was removed.

Not at all right now.
At the start of this World there were about 500-1000 players at any time.
Population wise is more related to game mechanics that struggle to keep up the interest in the long period, like every other games.
But i guess what other games does better is to have costantly new players joining in, cause advertisments,etc...while haven being a "small" game, once expired the players who knows about this game, doesn't have a huge supply of new players.

Mostly this, ungrateful characters that felt entitled to eternal free access from being spoiled by the game being free in the past. It was an ugly display of the abyss that is called humans...
