Yeah, salt is too hard to get a hold of for most, but if you can get it, it's wonderful. There are also quest rewards, but they are incosistent in what the final reward is, both in frequency of type and the amount given.
If you can, stay in the 200% area, but that can be slow, and if you're playing solo, not practical. definitely don't eat past 100% if you can avoid it. (Mathematically, time to produce food is the factor of efficiency.)
Mostly, it's how much work do you want to put in sourcing foods for FEP gains. Nothing wrong with eating everything in sight if you can make enough food.
As soon as you can get a house (or an animal burrow) to put a table and chair in, build them and decorate them the best you can to help decrease the hunger filled by food.
