how do trees spread their biomes

we just planted a bunch of spruce for aesthetic, they're on grass


will they grow, will it be slower, will they spread their own biome?

Its a chance when they are growing that they turn tile into forest. Because initially not on forest in your example it will take long, unless if a tile changes then the speed will pick up. If you planted many then the chance is very high this will occur.

AFAIK this is triggered through the decay mechanic: when the tree gets a decay hit it'll (additionally to restock the products) spread biome to a random tile near it - in the current implementation the map must be loaded for this to happen.

Since the trees work on the decay cycle, does that mean trees planted on claimed property will cycle slower?, well, I mean will the ground changes you mentioned above...actually...both LOL

Pretty sure ticks are same no matter if it's claimed, claim just prevent it from damaging things..

but yeah I thought it was a tick at every percentage of tree growing up but apparently not :D

If you have land that can change, you'll notice the decay ticks every once in a while. Since w8, the fields don't "unplow" as they did, so it's harder to see the effects of decay on a claim. Back then with a large enough field, you'd be constantly trying to replow spots here and there while planting crops.
