How do make a well? I made a drowsing rod and honestly it just makes me confused. I follow the arrow it points to only for it to make me go backwards or another random direction.

The important thing is that you can build a well anywhere. Doing so may significantly increase the amount of materials needed to build the well, namely rope. The dowsing rod points you to a place where the water table is highest in the area, and that may still be very costly and not get better water than what you can forage from the river or lake nearby.

As far as the readings, you may be near two high places, or far enough from away you get a random result. Pick a direction, move towards it, and after a short while, you should start getting consistent results.
