Need to discover metal

Postby DoctorCookie » Thu Oct 05, 2017 2:52 am

Ok so I have hardened leather and have a decent little base set up. I want to place a minehole. I used rustroot extract that I found and there is hornblend underneath me. will I be wasting time placeing mine hole and searching for ore?

Ok maybe I am asking a stupid question. Let me rephrase it. I understand that hornblend is a stone type, does it signify ore is present if I dig past it, ore should I be looking for something like granite?

Generally speaking, your mine hole doesn't have to be over any ore deposit. It's easier to just build a mine hole and mine in different directions.

If there is ore nearby, prospecting should tell you which direction it is in. Place your minehole down and then dig in the direction the prospecting pointed you in.

You might want to find the spot where the ore actually is and then move off a bit before placing the mine as if you put it too close, you destroy some or all of the ore tiles. (Some veins may not be any bigger than the minehole landing.)

It may be cheaper to begin with mapping the local caves and to prospect the areas you can reach easily through them from above ground to locate any ore veins. Prospecting always queries one level below, cave entrances and surface mineholes lead you to the same level - being unable to mine (when the rock is to hard) starting in a cave is less frustrating than building a minehole into a such an hardness node.

Just make sure to be at full health so a cave-in (they increase in damage the deeper you go) will, while it can hurt you, not kill you. While breaking cave walls is a gamble without metal for supports, the minesweeper minigame enables you to figure out the unstable tiles to avoid...

Ore deposits are totally independent of the type of rocks around them. Yeah, doesn't make sense to me either.

As a geologist, this is one of the most annoying things in this game for me.
