Tin/copper/iron what? Nugget, ore, bar... I brought those three, and the thing didn't accept any.

Two things: you have to right-click the item onto the questgiver to get the 'deliver' flower menu option, the questgiver can be on a lower level (so you might have tried to interact with an innocent boulder/tree on the surface that just is in the same location). Try entering a nearby cave, in case the quest marker still shows the questgiver isn't on the surface...
