Horses coming off hitching post

My bro and i have been trying to tame some horses, and the last three disappeared. Two despawned overnight, one despawned in a few hours without ever going into combat stance. We were trying to figure out what was going on, then while i was farming, i saw that the fourth horse we had previously hitched had suddenly become un-hitched for no reason, and was running all over our base.

I don't have a animal pen yet since we're in the process of doing some renovation. Can they wander too far from the hitch post and break the rope or something?

In case your hitching post is near a map border the animal can wander off the map tile and detaches from the post for some reasons.
