How many tiles do i need t give a tree so it doesnt stop growing prematurely?

That was a legacy thing, and stunting is purely random now. I'd suggest making sure you have a good walk space around your trees, though. it would suck to fell a tree and have to chop down the good neighbors to get to it.

ok thanks. And as a followup question, do mulberry trees have a limited number of leaves?

yes, 250 per fully matured mulberry tree. (less if the tree is stunted or not yet mature). Like all trees (I think?) they eventually regrow their products, but that can take a while (I'm not sure how long, I've been following the advice to just plant new mulberry trees and cut them down).

Yeah, that's best advice. Tree regrowth (and maturity) are based on the decay mechanic. Since small trees, such as the mulberry (and shrubs), have small hitboxes, they tend to take a long time to regrow.
