What triggers trees to regen leaves/seeds/bark/branches?

As the topic says i'm wonder what makes a tree regen it's shits.

The same system by which built objects decay, which, because of a certain recent update, should happen somewhat often

If you are making silk, i suggest to just replanting them and cutting them down instantly after taking the leafs.
