Dirt Roads

Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this topic.
I was just wondering if the dirt roads all over the map are player created or were there originally when the map was created?
If they are player created, who maintains them? (I tried to make a small dirt road of my own and grass grew over it within days)

Sometimes they cross water as well. Is there a way to fill in water to make it shallow?

Without a picture, it's not exactly easy to be sure what you're describing, but I'd guess it's what the devs call a "game trail," which are spawned with the world. They have a silightly higher chance of spawning animals nearby than other land types.

Player made paths are usually tiles that have been modified by "stomp to dirt" or with paving. These decay back to normal over time. Players that want to build roads for fast travel use milestones and wooden roadsigns.
