Big question. I'm currently in the process of making a video tutorial so I'm in a position to offer some current advice.

Gather discovery LP which you will receive every time you collect a unique item for the first time.

On the Lore & Skills tab of the Character Sheet, purchase foraging, hunting as well as lumberjacking and carpentry.

Buy a minimum of 9 points of exploration. Collect Stinging Nettle and craft two pairs of pants and two shirts, make a sprucecap, an axe and a pair of clogs. (You can look these items up on the wiki.)

Collect 6 birchbark and make a backpack. Construct a dreamcatcher.

Purchase The Will to Power and Stone Working. This will let you craft feather trinket and mirkwood offering.

Collect any small animals you find and stockpile the skins and bones. Build some drying frames and dry your skins. Purchase Farming and Yeomanry. Stake a claim. Keep any mole pawbones for gilding later on.

Craft a kuksa, purchase a minimum of 5 points of survival, craft some taproot lacings and raise your survival by two points for every taproot lacing you have. Then focus on masonry.

Craft a clay cauldron and make heaps of bone glue. Build a study desk. Purchase leatherworking, build tanning tubs and make ten leather. Purchase ropemaking and build a ropewalk.

Purchase fishing, collect bait and make a fishing rod. This will give you food and more discovery LP.

Purchase skills and collect materials required to build a palisade. Build a palisade. Expand your claim over the palisade.

Pretty basic info off the top of my head. You can go from there.
Laying flat.

You also might want to get the requirements to build http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Wilderness_Beacon so your firends can spawn at your place, together it's more fun.
