A lot of the important actions are based on unarmed. As you progress, you'll run into more important maneuvers such as "oak stance," "combat meditation," and others that need solid unarmed skill. And yes, early on you do a lot of punching and kicking of things in a fight because you need to learn how to cleave and sideswipe and such "from practice" vs different animals. You can do pure melee combat, but it's not recommended. I'm not sure what is considered the ideal balance between the two are.
Also, marksmanship should probably be avoided with the current rules, but since you're new and not familiar with the systems, it might be easier to take the penalties from using ranged weapons rather than trying to fight whatever you're after.
