Making paths through rivers?

I seem to come back to this game about once a year, and I've been curious about something lately: some playermade-looking paths that I travel on pass through rivers with what seems to be a terraformed section of the river where a small walkway of shallow water crosses through the deep water. are these actually player-made, or are these paths just old and were generated with the world? if they were player-made, how?

They were generated with the world. It's not possible for players to change the water depth.
