What crime is lockpicking?

Postby Attas » Fri Jan 18, 2019 1:32 pm

Title. What permissions do I need to setup to make villagemates leave scents when picking a lock?

If anyone is wondering, I tested and it's rummaging. It looks pretty light to me, it should be under vandalism in my opinion.

I wanted to agree with you but then I thought that if I give you rummaging permission it sort of means "I allow you to come and open my doors"... So it's probably fine(separate permission just for lockpicking sounds unnecessary).

If a door or chest is locked it's because the owner didn't want people looking inside it unless they have a key. The only advantage I see is that it gives people the *option* to try to pick a lock and be caught in the process (depending on its quality and the person's skills, it can take up to 24 hours). Still, I'd move it to a more serious crime category.

Personally, I would move it over to "theft" category, as rummaging for villages is a potential ask for troubles, especially when locks were introduced to doors and it might effectively effect people's mind.

Rummage is look where you are no supposed to. Theft is taking item you are no supposed to. Picking lock implies looking but not necessarily taking. I think this rummaging crime is correct.

Well, there is slight difference between opening a door and opening a locked door. Current system doesn't distinguish these two. Technically it calls for a separate category (because as you said, on the other side there is a difference between looking and taking) between rummaging and theft, but I think it's too much just for this particular case. If we have to make a compromise and merge it either with rummaging or with theft I think rummaging is better. The worst which could happen is that someone peeks into a locked container without you knowing it. But if he takes anything from there it's still a theft.

Assuming that other side of this door is some area I am not supposed to be in, then I think there is no great difference between if there is lock on door or not. In either case I have entered some location I should not be in, just in one case it took me a bit more work.

Maybe there would be argument if picking the lock breaks this lock so that owner needs to create new lock. If this were true, I could see reason to make it vandalism, since you destory lock. I believe current case in game is you can just relock this same lock after it has been picked, without changing the lock, so I think this does not apply. The only thing lock owner loses is the secrets beyond the lock.
