Running a decent version on linux

Postby Mr-Pickles » Sun Jan 20, 2019 9:43 pm

i just got a chromebook, and since it's a chromebook i can't run haven, so i downloaded Linux. I have no idea how to use Linux, and i'm incredibly lost, i've looked up other forums and used, Javaws autohaven.jnlp running it through Icedteaweb. it works, but there's so much lag that i can't do anything. Is there any other client? browser ? that i can use to make it run faster.

I don't know much about this, please be patient with me.

Some more information about the version of 'Linux' might help someone to come up with ideas.

In case the lag is with the cursor: adding to viewtopic.php?f=47&t=62316 or asking the ones that posted workarounds might help.

But I suspect a chromebook might not be beefy enough to run Haven fluently.

This. Some hardware specs would be useful to know what you're working with so it can be compared to hardware we know to run Haven at a stable framerate.

just the specific model would be helpful. Someone can look up technical specs if you're not sure what you're looking at.

That's a start about the software side.

The output of `lspci` and `cat /proc/cpuinfo` would tell us something about the hardware.

My guess is that this system is too thin to play Haven at a reasonable framerate.

This is probably the case. I think that chromebooks are only meant for using browser and some light-weight sites with it.
Currently there really isn't any lightweight client.

Chromebooks pretty much use low cost Celeron processors. I looked up a bunch last night, but as there's a wide variety, it's hard to say exactly what processor it has. The one issue is that they all rely on integrated Intel GPUs, and these have been notoriously lacking for playing Haven on until the last generation or two. It could simply be that the driver isn't properly optimized and finding a better driver might help. (because who games with integrated Intel GPUs?)

Knowing the specific model number (and potentially serial number) of the computer might provide more information and provide further avenues of research.

Yeah, after talking to friends who know more about this, it is most likely that it just isn't the right computer to run Haven. The model name is 06/5c if you really wanted to know, but i think i'll other ways to get ready for world 11, Thanks for all your help
