New World Fears

Postby DauntlessGolem » Wed Jan 23, 2019 1:58 am

So I was wondering how people go about starting out in a new world. I'm excited but particularly worried, for fear of falling behind and just getting demolished by some peeved players late in the game. My main questions are how quick do people accelerate in quality via trees/tools and how quick do people get mines and metal set up. Personally I'm going to rush a palisade, but I don't know how quick I'll be able to get mining up as in this world I was only able to start after I took some 100q+ stuff off abandoned bases. Currently I've only played in this world and a bit in World 7, so a brand new world is very foreign in terms of progression.

+1, not that it will matter anyway.

As a note regarding the questions:
World 11 is (hopefully) getting changes to the development speed of characters (fixing some FUBAR mechanics), experience from prior worlds will likely differ.

Getting wall as soon as possible is good idea I think. Metal is bottleneck by coal and tar kiln take long time to run. I think in W10 there is also no coal for mining in cave level, but maybe I am mistaken. The men also must spend many points to buy skills to attack you. In general, I will not worry about being slaughtered if you make wall a priority.

If it can be fixed, then I think it is not FUBAR by definition.

Rush Yeomanry. Be ready to baby sit your new claim the 8ish hours for it to dry. Rush the materials to build a palisade. Babysit the corner post for the time it takes to dry. Be ready to fight. Odds are few people will be able to take out the cornerpost once it has set a couple hours. (Soak increases from the time its built until it reaches full.) Don't leave any materials anywhere they might get stolen. Log off with the most important stuff on you. If you're worried about drying racks... some people will steal everything they can, others will take dried hides and leave fresh ones on, some will just ignore. (I'm guilty of the second, but used to be drying time was 8 hrs. Good chance the fresh would be dry by the time the person logged back in again and not a clue wiser.)

Other than that... we'll have to see how mechanics are changed. So much of it depends on who your friends are and what the goals are. Team efforts get specialized really fast. One person goes for the claim, another for rushing combat, hunting, and pvp, others for foraging and such, etc etc. On your own, you have to set priorities. Claim and food first, then mining.

Depends on you reading the R as repair or recognition.

You are right. And it was a surprise change we had to discover. There is no guarantee something like this will not happen again this time.

As for advice - don't make your initial base visible from a river (unless boating changes dramatically).

This will also be my first world start so please take the following with a grain of salt:

It appears to me, based on many forums comments I have seen over the course of the past year, that in addition to the above suggestions (rush to yeomanry, rush to wall, hide base from rivers, etc) one who is super paranoid of griefers should probably start their base inside a cave or animal burrow until they are able to build a pali, and maybe even afterwards. Remember that at world start, there are no miners to open the back side of your cave and murder you...that wont happen till about day 3 or later and the odds of them stumbling over YOUR cave even then is pretty low. If you claim and pali it properly early, it should be relatively "safe"...I think.

no need to fear.
so far ive played every world since world 7. never once been have i been attacked, sieged or otherwise killed purposely. 2 chars have died from players. both were opportunity kills from the attacker.
and as for falling beind. if you are not part of a LARGE village, you will fall behind regardless, but thats fine tbh. if you play for number 1 dont play alone.

As was said you are going to fall behind regardless if you aren't in a big faction. I would start out in a burrow or cave, or even just out of sight of passing boats and begin to feel out my neighbors. I wouldn't be so hasty to get that pali up... If they seem unfriendly or hostile I would plan on finding a better area to settle down in.
Just my .O2... Taste, drink.., like/hate...

Anyone can keep up if they want. It's a matter of having the drive to do so and commit the time necessary. Most people have lives other than playing a video game, though. That's the strength of organizing into a group: accomplish things together you can't do on your own.
