The point of this rule is to prevent players from using claims offensively without a defender having a chance to remove them. Of course, the same people pull all kinds of other crap to prevent theirs being attacked.
I'm surprised my claim lasted 8 hours. I've had stuff stolen from me and even caught somebody in the act once, but those 8 hours had 0 interference to my drying racks or my claim.
By the way, the wiki says the claim doesn't become active until you click on it after the 8 hours are done. I don't know if that means it's still destructible if you don't finish the process, but it's better safe than sorry, so make sure you build your claim at a time when you know you can finish the process 8 hours later.
